Charlie Tremont
Those of us associated with Canterbury Golf Club and The Kiely Cup were deeply saddened
to learn Charlie Tremont, -Gilmour Academy's varsity boys' golf coach passed away on April 23rd.
Those who knew him, knew Charlie as one of the good guys--a gentleman in every sense of the word. At the beginning, with the inaugural Kiely Cup in 2005, Charlie personally saw to it that Gilmour serve as the host school with the Ohio State Athletic Association. He was a trusted advisor and great friend to the countless young men he mentored over the years. He presence at the Kiely Cup will be missed this year and well into the future.
Gilmour Academy honored Charlie as the "Man of the Year" in 2012, and posted the following
after the award ceremony:
"Charlie graduated from Gilmour in 1970 and attended Baldwin Wallace College, where he earned a degree in management and finance in 1974. He went on to earn his master’s degree in systems management from Baldwin Wallace in 1983. Currently, Tremont is a principal at Tremont & Associates,
a corporate finance and management advisory firm in Solon. He is also the finance and business manager
at the Church of St. Claire in Lyndhurst as well as a professional golf instructor for the past 30 years at Grantwood Golf Club in Solon.
Previously, he has served as the chief financial officer of the Cuyahoga County Public Library and the vice president of finance and operations at the Victor S. Voinovich Company, a commercial real estate company. Finally, he was the founder and owner of Indoor Fairways Golf Club, which produced a video simulation golf machine.
Throughout his career, Tremont has remained dedicated to Gilmour. He served as the school’s finance officer and director of admissions from 1975 to 1978. He and his wife, Karen, sent their two sons, Chris ’01 and A.J. ’04 to Gilmour. Since 2004, Tremont has served as the head Varsity Golf coach and has a match record of 57-27 and a tournament record of 483-260. He has led his teams to seven sectional team championships, seven district team championships and seven top eight team finishes in the state tournament. His team won the Division III state championship in 2010 and he has coached four individual state champions."
